My Friend Yarn

My Friend Yarn is a mother and daughter collaboration creating distinctive handmade cushion covers. We combine a modern graphic influence with traditional techniques and high-quality materials.

Who we are

The company took shape in late 2010 and we launched our first collection in September 2011. Eva Holst (mother) has a BA in Textile Craft Education and has worked as a textile teacher in Stockholm for 20 years.

Lisa Holst (daugther) has a BA in Graphic and Media design and works as a Graphic designer and Illustrator.

How We Think

All of the yarn in our cushions are made by a small, family-run company in the Sheltland Islands, that has been trading for five generations. Their yarn has a low carbon footprint as all the fleeces are bought from local crofters and all of the processes then are carried out under one roof.

We care about the longevity of your cushion, so in our washing instructions we recommend you air it out instead washing it. Its easier on the yarn and saves the environment one wash cycle. Sustainability is important to us so the tags on the cushions are printed on 100% recycled paper, which is also bio-degradable.

How We Do It

Manufacture of the cushions takes place in the family home in Stockholm where Eva (mother) uses a hand-powered knitting machine to translate Lisa’s (daughter) hand drawn illustrations into cushions. The machine adds speed and ease to the work but everything is still done by hand. After knitting the cushion cover is then washed, assembled and tagged by hand.

We Like Wool

Using wool has many benefits as it is one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable fibers in the world. It isn’t manmade and is known to use less energy during its production than manmade fibers. It also has a greater lifespan.

Wool is fully biodegradable, so at the end of its long life it won’t linger in landfill for years like the synthetic fibers. Other benefits include that it is flame retardant and if it burns it doesn’t emit fumes or melt. Neither does wool create static charge, which is nice if you are resting your head on a wooly cushion.
